Reed was born in West Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of Cheryl Houston, beauty, and Seth Reed, a set designer. She has an older brother, Nathan August Reed. His father was Jewish, and her mother, from Cherokee and Italian descent, is Christian; Reed was raised without religion, although he has described himself as "Jewish" and grew up around Judaism (her brother had a Bar Mitzvah).
Reed has stated that her early home life "complicated." Reed's parents divorced when he was two, and he was raised solely by his mother. In 2002, when Reed was 14 years old, he moved out of his mother's house and started living alone, especially in the apartment from the Los Angeles area.
After Thirteen's success, Reed returned to Alexander Hamilton High School, but dropped out again after a year. He cites his experiences involving "mothers who sneak into the school at lunchtime to confront and bothered about the film" as the reason for his departure. She earned a high school diploma through homeschooling.

Reed and director Catherine Hardwicke finished the script for Thirteen semi-autobiographical films in six days, a relatively short time for a Hollywood script to be written. Manufacturers asked Reed to play a role in the film because they had trouble casting, considering it an "uncomfortable" role most young actresses . The film, starring Evan Rachel Wood, was released in 2003 to positive reviews, giving Reed some recognition in Hollywood as both an actress and playwright. After the film's release, Reed also appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and hosted a number of awards, including the Young Hollywood Awards (2003) and the Independent Spirit Show Awards nominations, followed by the West Independent Spirits Awards, both in 2004.
Reed continued to portray sexually promiscuous teenagers, including Lords of Dogtown characters, also directed by Hardwicke. In early 2006, she appeared on the series The OC, playing Sadie, a new love interest for the character Ryan Atwood. Reed noted she disagreed with the "trendy things and shallow" that The OC promoted, and that he appeared in the series only on the advice of his agent. Coincidentally, Reed appeared in The O.C. at the same time as later Twilight co-stars Cam Gigandet and Jackson Rathbone.
